About Halwick News

Halwick News is an independent online news organization based in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 2016, we specialize in investigative journalism, science coverage, environmental issues, and stories that mainstream media often overlooks or avoids.

We're a small team of journalists who believe that asking hard questions and following evidence wherever it leads is more important than maintaining access to powerful institutions. We have no corporate ownership, no advertising, and no pressure to kill stories that might upset the wrong people.

Our Mission

We exist to hold power accountable through rigorous, evidence-based journalism. That means:

  • Following the evidence: We pursue stories based on facts and credible sources, not ideology or predetermined narratives.
  • Asking uncomfortable questions: We challenge official statements and dig deeper when answers don't add up.
  • Protecting sources: We take source protection seriously and use secure communication channels.
  • Transparency: We're honest about our funding, our methods, and our limitations.
  • Depth over speed: We'd rather get it right than get it first.

How We're Funded

Halwick News operates on a modest annual budget of approximately $400,000, funded entirely through reader subscriptions, individual donations, and small grants from journalism foundations. We accept no advertising and have no corporate ownership.

This makes us financially vulnerable, but it also makes us truly independent. We don't answer to advertisers, corporate boards, or political interests. We answer to our readers and to the truth.
